The South Dakota Department of Gaming reported $13.6 million in total statistical win from slot machines, table games, and sportsbooks in October. This was a slight increase from the previous year, with about $1.1 million in taxes generated for the state. However, revenue from retail sportsbooks dropped by 73.8% to $45,000 in October, compared to nearly $175,000 in the same month last year.
The sports betting handle also decreased from $1 million to around $915,000, with NFL being the most popular sporting event for bets, drawing in almost $408,000 in wagers. Despite the high betting activity, sportsbooks lost more than $35,000 from NFL betting alone in October.
Other sports, including Formula 1, Major League Baseball, and PGA golf, also resulted in negative revenues for statewide sportsbooks, but each with losses of less than $2,000. The only exception was NCAA football, which brought in over $47,000 in revenue for state sportsbooks, surpassing the total of losses from other sports.
Overall, the gaming industry in South Dakota saw mixed results in October, with slot machines and table games showing a small increase in total win, while sports betting revenue experienced a significant decline. Despite the challenges, the industry continues to contribute to the state’s tax revenue and remains a popular pastime for residents and visitors alike.
