After 11 seasons as the head coach of the University of North Dakota football program, Bubba Schweigert is stepping down to transition to a senior administrative role within the athletic department. Schweigert will now serve as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Engagement and Mentorship. During his tenure as head coach, Schweigert led the Fighting Hawks to new heights at the Football Championship Subdivision level, capturing conference titles and coaching numerous All-America honorees.
University of North Dakota Director of Athletics, Bill Chaves, expressed gratitude for Schweigert’s passion and legacy as a football coach, and looks forward to utilizing his skills in a different capacity to benefit the university and its student-athletes. Schweigert will continue as head coach until a replacement is named, with a national search set to begin immediately following university hiring practices.
In his new role, Schweigert will focus on building relationships with student-athletes, staff, alumni, and the community, while working to develop and implement programs that support the growth of individuals within the athletic department. Both Chaves and Schweigert will be available for comments on Monday, December 2 at 1 p.m.
Under Schweigert’s leadership, the North Dakota football program achieved success on and off the field, with accomplishments in academics and athletics. His transition to a senior administrative role signals a new chapter for Schweigert, who remains dedicated to serving the university in a different capacity.
