Volunteers work to renovate historic markers throughout South Dakota • South Dakota Searchlight

Jim Carlson, an 84-year-old volunteer with the Minnehaha County Historical Society, has been refurbishing historical markers in the Sioux Falls area over the past two summers. He has touched up 65 markers so far, spending about seven hours on each sign. The markers, erected by the South Dakota State Historical Society and local organizations, memorialize historic events, places, and people across the state. However, harsh weather conditions have taken a toll on the markers, fading and discoloring them to the point of illegibility.

Local organizations are responsible for maintaining the markers, but funding can be a challenge. It can cost between $1,300 and $1,700 to have a sign professionally refurbished. Some residents have taken it upon themselves to contribute financially to the refurbishing efforts. State legislator Tony Venhuizen has highlighted the importance of preserving historical markers as they provide valuable insights into South Dakota’s past.

The state is discussing the possibility of a fund to help local organizations maintain or refurbish historical signs, as awareness of local responsibilities for the markers has faded in some areas. Carlson estimates that he has saved the Minnehaha County Historical Society about $50,000 by refurbishing the signs himself. The markers serve as an opportunity to learn about South Dakota history that may not be widely taught in schools. Carlson hopes that visitors take the time to appreciate the history explained on the signs as he continues his work next spring with the hope of more volunteers joining him.
