Some areas of the U.S. could see northern lights on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving may bring cool and rainy weather in many parts of the country, but solar storms could lead to the northern lights being visible in the U.S. Minor to moderate geomagnetic storms are expected on Thursday and Friday due to a filament eruption on Monday, sending high-energy plasma towards Earth. The auroras could appear in states such as Washington, Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, Idaho, Wyoming, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Clear conditions are best for viewing, with the Aurora Dashboard by NOAA providing updates on activity and forecasts. Unlike earlier this year, these storms are not likely to cause major disruptions to communication systems. The northern lights are normally seen at high altitudes, but intense solar storms can make them visible in lower latitudes. The sun is gearing up for an expected peak in activity next July, leading to more frequent occurrences of the auroras being visible far south this year. The interaction between charged particles from the sun and the Earth’s magnetic field causes the beautiful light displays in the sky.
