Jurors in New Mexico awarded a man more than $412 million in a medical malpractice case involving a men’s health clinic that operates in multiple states. The man’s attorneys believe this verdict will prevent others from falling victim to a scheme involving fraud and dangerous penile injections. This case is the largest amount ever awarded in a medical malpractice case in the U.S., according to the lawyers.
The lawsuit alleged that the man, 66 at the time, visited the clinic in 2017 seeking treatment for fatigue and weight loss. The clinic misdiagnosed him and administered invasive erectile dysfunction shots that caused irreversible damage. The plaintiff’s lawyers accused the clinic of setting up a fraudulent scheme to make money off of elderly men by misleading them about the need for injections.
The president of NuMale Medical Center, the defendant in the case, stated that the company focuses on delivering responsible patient care while adhering to safety and compliance standards. The company has clinics in several other states as well.
The jury found that the defendants’ fraudulent and negligent conduct caused damages to the plaintiff and violated the Unfair Practices Act. NuMale Medical Center has ongoing legal proceedings related to this case and cannot comment on specific details at this time.
