South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has been part of the “America First Attorney General Advisory Council,” a group of Republican state attorneys general advising President-elect Donald Trump. The council has met at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida to provide input on the rule of law and relationships between federal, state, and local prosecutors.
Jackley, a former U.S. attorney for South Dakota, had little to say about Trump’s initial pick for U.S. attorney general, Matt Gaetz, who ultimately withdrew his nomination amid allegations of drug use and sex payments. Now, Trump has nominated Republican former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, whom Jackley has known since 2009.
Jackley praised Bondi’s prosecutorial experience and believes she will lead the Department of Justice in a different direction, focusing more on the rule of law and public safety. He expressed disappointment with relationships between federal and state prosecutors and hopes for a stronger partnership under Bondi’s leadership.
The advisory role with the Trump team is ongoing, with Jackley advocating for a focus on issues such as the border, human trafficking, and opioids that directly impact South Dakota. He believes the Department of Justice and the presidential administration should prioritize these areas to protect communities. Jackley looks forward to supporting Bondi during the confirmation process and serving with her once confirmed as U.S. attorney general.
