Jerimiah James Stange, 31, has been arrested on felony arson charges for his alleged involvement in nine separate wildland and structure fires that occurred in Custer County, South Dakota between August 28, 2024, and September 30, 2024. The fires, which include the Lime Kiln Fire and the Carrol Creek Fire, placed people at risk and damaged significant property.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley and Custer County State’s Attorney Tracy Kelley praised the efforts of firefighters and agencies involved in investigating the case and making the arrest. The investigation was conducted by the Division of Criminal Investigation, the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, and assisted by other agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Stange is currently held in the Pennington County Jail and will face prosecution by the Custer County State’s Attorney’s Office. It is important to note that as per the U.S. Constitution, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
