South Dakota gets ready for the arrival of the B-21 Bomber

The anticipation of the arrival of B-21 Bombers at Ellsworth Air Force Base has raised concerns for the local school district in South Dakota. With over $2 billion invested in infrastructure at the base, the school district is predicting a need for a new elementary school to accommodate the influx of new students.

Despite the significant investment in the air force base, US Air Force documents show that none of this money is directly benefitting the local community. Douglas School Superintendent, Kevin Case, is pushing for a collaborative funding model to help cover the estimated cost of over $65 million for a new school. Case is requesting $15 million from the state, with the district contributing $7 to $10 million and having already put in $6 million.

Case highlighted the unique situation of the district, which is home to an active military installation. He pointed out that more than 70% of the new students expected to move to the area in the next 15 years are projected to be under eleven years old, making a new elementary school a necessity for the already full district.

The district is seeking support from the state as it prepares for the arrival of the B-21 Bombers and the resulting increase in student population. A collaborative funding approach is seen as essential to ensure that the local community is able to meet the needs of the growing population.
