Final push for Florida’s abortion ballot measure in days leading up to election

Since Florida implemented a ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy in May, around 700 women sought care at Planned Parenthood’s Miami office only to find out it was too late. Some women traveled to other states to end their pregnancies, while others were left with no choice. As a result of this ban, Dr. Chelsea Daniels, a physician with Planned Parenthood, is advocating for a ballot measure known as Amendment 4, which would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution. The amendment would guarantee the right to abortion before fetal viability, or about 24 weeks.

Groups in favor of the ballot measure are making a final push for support through early voting, but face the unique hurdle of requiring 60% voter approval in Florida. Opposition to Amendment 4 is coming from Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and his administration, who have ramped up efforts against the amendment. The state Department of Health sent cease-and-desist letters to broadcast stations running ads supporting the amendment, causing a federal judge to intervene.

Advocates for Amendment 4 are optimistic about its passage, despite challenges in educating voters about the restrictions imposed by the current abortion ban. The campaign has focused on raising awareness about the lack of exceptions for cases of rape, incest, or a woman’s health under the ban. Organizers have engaged in extensive voter outreach efforts, with some success in increasing awareness of the ballot measure among voters. Overall, the outcome of the Amendment 4 vote remains uncertain due to the stringent 60% voter approval threshold in Florida.
