San Francisco Police Department has reported a 34% decrease in crime thanks to the use of new technology, particularly the Drone as First Responder (DFR) system. Unlike traditional field drones, DFRs are manned centrally, allowing for quicker response times to incidents. SFPD Chief Bill Scott described the technology as a “game changer” and showcased footage of a successful arrest of a bike thief using DFR technology.
Mayor London Breed praised the DFR technology for its effectiveness in addressing issues like car break-ins and sideshows. The use of DFR footage has also led to more convictions in criminal cases. The technology, while not entirely new, has been successfully implemented by other agencies like Fremont police and fire.
Six DFR units will be strategically stationed across the city to help alleviate the department’s staffing shortage and increase overall effectiveness in responding to crime. Chief Scott noted that despite being short 500 officers, the DFRs will improve response times and help in making more arrests.
Collaboration with other agencies, such as San Jose, will also play a key role in implementing similar technology to combat crime. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan expressed interest in learning from SFPD’s use of DFRs and potentially utilizing the technology in their own city to address issues like sideshows.
The overall impact of the DFR technology has been significant in reducing crime rates and improving the efficiency of law enforcement efforts in San Francisco.
