Sources say that Trump, Vance, and Harris campaign affiliates were targeted by phones in China.

A recent Chinese hacking campaign targeted the phones of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, Senator JD Vance, and individuals affiliated with Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign. Additionally, the staff of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was also targeted. It is unclear if any communications were stolen in the attacks.

The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency are investigating the unauthorized access to telecommunications infrastructure by actors affiliated with China. They have notified affected companies and are providing technical assistance.

The U.S. government recently determined that China has hacked telecommunications companies including AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen Technologies. Verizon confirmed the targeting of U.S. telecommunications providers by a highly sophisticated nation-state actor.

China’s embassy in Washington denied knowledge of the specific situation and stated that China does not interfere in U.S. elections. It is unclear if the hack was intended to influence the 2024 presidential election, as China has a history of cyberespionage operations directed at U.S. businesses and government figures.

While Russia and Iran have been accused of attempting to sway the election in favor of their preferred candidates, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence has stated that China does not seek to influence the 2024 presidential race. The ODNI did not comment on whether this assessment still stands in light of China’s alleged targeting of both campaigns’ phones.
