The New Mexico National Guard conducted search and rescue operations in Roswell following severe flooding caused by record rainfall in Chaves County. At least two people were reported dead, with 309 individuals rescued and 38 hospitalized due to undisclosed injuries. The city officials reported receding water levels in some areas but high levels in downtown Roswell, with all roads leading to and from the city closed. Meteorologists warned of more rain and potential flash floods. Seven individuals were rescued from floodwaters after their car was swept away, and Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington found himself stranded on top of his vehicle due to rising waters. A shelter was set up at the Eastern New Mexico state fairgrounds for displaced residents. The National Guard, with 57 guardsmen on the ground, remained on duty to assist as needed, utilizing tactical vehicles capable of driving in deep water. Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar, the adjutant general of the Guard, expressed their commitment to helping the community and working with partner agencies to ensure the safety of citizens affected by the flooding.
