Al-Qard Al-Hassan, a bank in Lebanon, has been under U.S. sanctions since 2007 for allegedly being used by Hezbollah to manage its financial activities and gain access to the international financial system. The bank has more than 30 branches, many of which are located in the Shiite-majority southern suburbs of Beirut. Israel recently targeted these branches as part of its ongoing conflict with Hezbollah, alleging that the bank is used to fund terrorist activities. The Israeli military has also launched ground raids into southern Lebanon to dismantle Hezbollah’s weapons and disrupt their operations, resulting in the deaths of Hezbollah members. The escalating hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah have resulted in the deaths of thousands of people in Lebanon and the displacement of over a million others. Israeli officials have vowed to reveal how Iran funds Hezbollah’s activities through civilian institutions, associations, and NGOs that act as fronts for terrorism. The situation in Lebanon is further complicated by the country’s economic and political crises, with the Treasury accusing Hezbollah of abusing the Lebanese financial sector and draining the country’s resources.
