Seven individuals were tragically killed following the collapse of a gangway in Georgia.

Seven people are believed to have died after a gangway collapsed on a ferry dock on Sapelo Island, Georgia. At least 20 people went into the water when the structure gave way, prompting a response from the U.S. Coast Guard and state and local agencies. The number and extent of injuries is unknown at this time. Search and rescue missions are ongoing, with the Coast Guard still actively searching for survivors. A reunification center has been set up at a nearby church for families and loved ones affected by the incident. The collapse occurred during a celebration of Gullah Geechee culture, a centuries-old tradition maintained by descendants of West and Central African slaves in the Southeastern United States. President Joe Biden has offered federal resources to assist the affected parties, including the Gullah Geechee. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences and asked for prayers for those affected by the tragedy. The dock associated with the gangway is used by public ferry vessels and research trawlers. Sapelo Island, where the incident occurred, is located about 72 miles south of Savannah on the Atlantic Coast. The incident is currently under investigation.
