A five-alarm brush fire named the Keller Fire broke out in Oakland, California, prompting evacuation orders and burning two homes on Friday afternoon. The fire started in a home on Mountain Avenue and spread to a grove of Eucalyptus trees, growing to 15 acres. By Saturday morning, the fire was 50% contained, with crews working aggressively to fully extinguish it. Fire Chief Damon Covington stated that while the forward progress of the fire had been stopped, there was still a lot of work to be done. Two homes were impacted by the flames, with dozens of others in surrounding areas being threatened but not damaged. Evacuation orders were initially issued for Campus Drive and Crystal Ridge Court, expanding to other nearby locations. Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao urged those under evacuation orders to leave immediately to protect their health. Delane Sims, who had one of the damaged homes, recounted how her husband narrowly escaped when a front window exploded as their property caught on fire. Despite the loss, she expressed gratitude that her husband was safe.
