Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya shatters women’s marathon world record at Chicago race | Athletics News

Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich has broken the women’s marathon world record at the Chicago Marathon, finishing in 2:09:56, nearly two minutes faster than the previous record. Chepngetich dedicated her victory to Kelvin Kiptum, who set the men’s world record at last year’s race before passing away in a car accident.

Chepngetich dominated the race, leaving her competitors behind by the halfway mark and crossing the finish line to claim her third title in Chicago. She expressed her joy at achieving her dream of setting a world record, with this win being her third consecutive victory in Chicago.

The absence of Olympic champion Sifan Hassan did not deter Chepngetich, who set a fast pace and reached the halfway point in just over one hour. She maintained her lead throughout the race and sprinted through the final miles to secure the world record.

In the men’s race, John Korir of Kenya won with a time of 2:02:44, finishing ahead of his competitors from Ethiopia and Kenya. Korir also dedicated his win to Kiptum, using his memory as motivation during the race.

The Chicago Marathon paid tribute to Kiptum by observing a moment of silence at the start line and distributing stickers with his record-breaking time to participants. The event showed the resilience and determination of the Kenyan runners, with Chepngetich and Korir dominating the competition and honoring the memory of Kelvin Kiptum through their exceptional performances.
