The Palestinian Canadian community has been advocating for the recognition of anti-Palestinian racism in Canada’s updated anti-racism strategy. Despite acknowledging the discrimination faced by Palestinians, the government’s plan did not explicitly include anti-Palestinian racism as a form of systemic discrimination. The strategy did, however, address hate towards Jewish, Muslim, Arab, and Palestinian communities in general.
Canadian MP Salma Zahid has been leading efforts to push for the inclusion of anti-Palestinian racism in the government’s strategy. She organized roundtables to hear from Palestinians across Canada about their experiences with racism and plans to submit a report to the minister overseeing the strategy. Zahid emphasized that anti-Palestinian racism is deep-rooted and systemic, and action needs to be taken to combat it effectively.
A spokesperson for the minister overseeing the strategy stated that the government consulted with various communities, including Palestinian Canadians, and that funding is available to all communities, including Palestinians. Zahid continues to advocate for the recognition of anti-Palestinian racism and hopes to see it included in the government’s plan to combat systemic discrimination in Canada.
The Palestinian Canadian community continues to push for recognition and action against anti-Palestinian racism, highlighting the importance of addressing this issue within the broader context of systemic discrimination in Canada.
