Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, was killed in an Israeli air attack in Beirut, according to the Lebanon-based group. Nasrallah, known for standing up to Israel, lost support after Hezbollah’s involvement in Syria. Nasrallah, born in 1960, was a devout child and split from the Amal movement to form Hezbollah in the 1980s. He became the group’s leader in 1992 after his predecessor was killed by Israeli missiles. Nasrallah’s speeches and leadership helped elevate Hezbollah’s prominence among Lebanon’s Shia population.
Critics accused Nasrallah of holding onto power through Hezbollah’s weapons, which he refused to disarm. He faced backlash in 2019 for clashing with protesters calling for political change in Lebanon. Despite challenges, Nasrallah remained defiant and was seen as a defender of Shia Muslim rights by supporters.
Nasrallah’s death leaves Hezbollah without its charismatic leader. The group will now need to select a new leader and decide on the direction to take. Despite the loss of Nasrallah, Hezbollah remains a formidable organization determined to continue resisting Israeli aggression.
