Vice President Kamala Harris recently visited the US-Mexico border in Arizona, where she met with customs and border protection officials to discuss their efforts to combat traffickers and transnational criminal organizations. Harris walked along a section of the border wall constructed during the Obama administration and emphasized the need for an orderly and humane immigration system.
During her visit, Harris highlighted the changes at the border, noting a return to relative calm after an unprecedented surge of immigrants in recent years. She criticized former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, including family separations and the treatment of migrant children. Harris also called for a focus on solutions and legal paths to citizenship.
Harris’s visit comes amid criticism of the Biden administration’s immigration policies, which some say resemble Trump-era enforcement tactics. Despite the shift towards a tougher stance on immigration, Harris emphasized the importance of supporting border patrol agents and promoting humane border policies.
In a town hall event in Warren, Michigan, Trump criticized Harris’s approach to the border crisis and claimed to be the stronger candidate on immigration issues. A Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that 43% of voters favored Trump on immigration, compared to 33% who preferred Harris. Harris’s visit to the border and her focus on supporting law enforcement while advocating for a comprehensive and orderly immigration system reflect her ongoing efforts to address the challenges at the border.
