The Chicago White Sox suffered their 121st loss of the season, breaking the MLB record for most losses in a season previously held by the 1962 New York Mets. Despite winning 93 games in 2021 and claiming the American League Central division title, the White Sox have been on a downward trend with 81 wins in 2022 and 61 wins last season. They have only won 39 games so far this season with two games left.
The team has struggled offensively, ranking near the bottom in major statistical categories. They are last in the MLB in hits, runs, home runs, batting average, runs batted in, total bases, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. First baseman Andrew Vaughn has the highest batting average on the team at .248.
The White Sox had a rough start to the season with a 3-22 record, their worst 25-game start in franchise history. They also set a franchise record with a 21-game losing streak, becoming the first team since 1988 to lose at least 21 games in a row. Despite winning nine games each in May and June, the team only won seven games combined in July and August.
After their latest loss, the White Sox took to social media to express their frustration with the situation, posting a picture of a computer desktop with a list of things they’d rather do than read comments. The team mascot was depicted sitting against a wall with the caption “slams laptop shut til tomorrow.”
