Amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, civilians in the south are enduring catastrophic levels of bombardment, with more than 700 people killed since the conflict began. The United States and France are calling for a ceasefire to prevent further escalation, but Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused, vowing to continue striking Hezbollah until all objectives are met.
The heavy bombardment has forced over 90,000 people to flee their homes, with many seeking refuge in displacement shelters and rental apartments in Beirut. However, landlords are reportedly taking advantage of the situation by raising prices for apartments, making it difficult for displaced individuals to afford housing.
The conflict has also created tensions between different communities in Lebanon, with non-Shia populations hesitating to accept displaced individuals who may have ties to Hezbollah. Instances of hostility towards those displaying support for Hezbollah have been reported, exacerbating social tensions within the country.
Despite the ongoing conflict, some Lebanese, like Ali from the Bekaa Valley, are still hopeful for a negotiated ceasefire to prevent further civilian casualties. However, many fear that if ceasefire talks fail, the situation could escalate even further, leading to even more devastation and loss of life.
As the conflict continues, civilians in Lebanon remain caught in the crossfire, with the specter of an all-out war looming on the horizon.
