Vice President Kamala Harris is planning to make her first visit to the southern border since entering the 2024 race, with a focus on attacking former President Donald Trump on the issue. Harris is set to visit a border town in Arizona on Friday to highlight Trump’s role in scuttling a bipartisan border deal in Congress. Harris, as a former Attorney General from a border state, has emphasized the need for a secure, fair, orderly, and humane immigration system, contrasting it with the divisive politics of Trump.
Harris’s campaign is looking to showcase her previous work on border issues and position her as tough on bipartisan border security with a plan she is pushing. She has criticized Trump for killing a bill that would have addressed border issues and claims that if elected, she would revive the bill and sign it into law. Trump, on the other hand, has made the border and immigration central to his presidential pitch and has often used derogatory language towards migrants.
An NBC News poll found that a majority of registered voters believe Trump would handle securing the border and controlling immigration better than Harris, while Harris is favored for treating immigrants humanely and protecting their rights. Recent data has shown a decline in migrants seeking shelter and crossing the southern border in recent months, with Border Patrol apprehensions reaching a low point since Biden took office. Harris’s visit to the border on Friday will be her second as vice president and is seen as a crucial step in addressing her perceived weaknesses on immigration and border security issues.
