A 20-year-old California man, Nathaniel McGuire, threw an explosive device into the Santa Maria courthouse where he was to be arraigned, injuring three people. The injuries were not life-threatening, and all injured individuals were treated and released from the hospital. McGuire was arrested as he tried to get into his car after the explosion. The FBI is assisting in the investigation, and detectives believe a personal grudge was the motivation behind the incident. McGuire had been arrested previously for firearms violations on July 28, 2024. He was wearing body armor when he was taken into custody. McGuire is facing charges of attempted murder, using an explosive device in an attempt to kill someone, and possession of an explosive device. He is being held without bail. The courthouse, surrounding homes, and a school were evacuated after the explosion as the bomb squad checked for any additional explosives. There is no further threat to the community, according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff Undersheriff Craig Bonner. Santa Maria is a city in Santa Barbara County, located about 150 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
