Hurricane warnings have been issued for a large portion of Florida’s Gulf Coast and the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico in anticipation of Tropical Storm Helene strengthening into a major hurricane later this week. The warnings in Florida extend from Mexico Beach to the Anclote River, near Tampa. The storm is expected to become a hurricane on Wednesday and a major storm by Thursday as it moves across the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Storm surge could raise water levels in Tampa Bay by up to 8 feet, with other areas seeing levels rise between 3 and 15 feet. Rainfall totals are expected to reach 8 inches across the southeastern United States. Due to Helene’s large size, the storm’s hazards will likely impact a wide area. Officials are urging residents in the affected areas to take necessary precautions and prepare for the potential impacts of the storm.
