Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines was accused of fatally shooting district judge Kevin Mullins at a courthouse in Kentucky. Stines, a two-term sheriff, is expected to be charged with first-degree murder for the shooting. The motive behind the shooting was not disclosed, but it was reported that an argument between Stines and Mullins led to the shooting. The incident occurred in the judge’s chambers with no one else present. Stines turned himself in to authorities at the scene, and it is believed that there is surveillance video within the courthouse.
The small community of Whitesburg, where the courthouse is located, was described as being “shook” by the deadly violence, and State Trooper Matt Gayheart asked for prayers for the families involved. Mullins was a judge overseeing various legal matters in the 47th Judicial District.
The Kentucky Court of Justice is cooperating with the state police in the ongoing investigation and has extended sympathies to those impacted by the tragic event. Attorney General Russell Coleman has promised a full investigation and will collaborate with a special prosecutor in the case. The community is mourning the loss of Judge Mullins and grappling with the aftermath of the shooting.
