Rotterdam police search for witnesses to fatal stabbing as suspect apprehended

Rotterdam Police are investigating a stabbing incident near the Erasmus Bridge that left one man dead and another seriously wounded. The suspect, a 22-year-old man from Amersfoort, was apprehended after reportedly shouting “Allahu akbar” during the attack. The motive for the stabbing is currently unknown.

Witnesses reported the attacker wielding two large knives and targeting his victims in separate locations. Reniël Renato David Litecia, a sports instructor, intervened by disarming the attacker and throwing the knives away. Police have not released the identities of the suspect or the victims, in accordance with privacy guidelines.

The suspect was subdued by members of the public and police on Thursday night. A police spokesperson, Wessel Stolle, confirmed that it is part of the ongoing investigation to look into the attacker’s motive for the violent incident. Kristel Arntz, another police spokesperson, disclosed that the assailant allegedly attacked one person in an underground car park before targeting a second victim at the end of the bridge.

The swift action of witnesses in subduing the suspect after the attack has been commendable. The investigation is ongoing to determine the underlying cause of the stabbing. Anyone with relevant information about the incident is urged to come forward and assist the authorities in their inquiries.
