The FBI and two other government agencies have confirmed that Iranians sent unsolicited emails containing stolen material from former President Donald Trump’s campaign to people associated with his Democratic political rival, President Joe Biden. There is currently no evidence that recipients associated with Biden’s campaign responded to the emails. The Iranian hackers have also attempted to transmit nonpublic stolen material to media organizations. The FBI is closely monitoring this activity. The agencies also warned of foreign efforts to interfere in U.S. elections, particularly from Russia, Iran, and China. The Trump campaign accused Iran of trying to help Vice President Kamala Harris, with Trump claiming that Harris and her campaign were spying on him. The Harris campaign denied direct receipt of stolen information and cooperated with law enforcement. Law enforcement agencies contacted individuals associated with Biden’s campaign who received the emails, but there is no evidence of wrongdoing on their part. The Justice Department plans to file criminal charges related to the hacking of Trump’s campaign, and Iran has denied any involvement in the operation. In the past, the Justice Department has charged Iranians with election meddling during the 2020 presidential election.
