Typhoon Yagi causes massive destruction in Myanmar with hundreds dead in floods | Latest on the Floods

At least 226 people have been reported dead in Myanmar due to floods caused by Typhoon Yagi, with the death toll expected to rise as several people are still missing. The storm affected central provinces in conflict-torn Myanmar, adding to the humanitarian crisis already underway following a coup in February 2021. The flooding has particularly impacted regions like Naypyidaw, Mandalay, and Shan state, where heavy fighting has also been taking place.

Relief efforts have been underway with 388 camps set up in nine regions and states to provide aid such as drinking water, food, and clothes. The UN has reported that thousands of acres of agricultural land have been submerged, and tens of thousands of houses damaged. Access to the affected regions has been difficult due to damaged roads and disrupted networks.

Typhoon Yagi has also caused devastation in other parts of Southeast Asia, with almost 300 deaths in Vietnam and heavy rains and flooding in Thailand. In Laos, three people have died and thousands of paddy fields have been swamped. UNICEF has expressed concern for displaced people, including children, who were already struggling with limited services due to ongoing conflict.

The widespread impact of Typhoon Yagi across Southeast Asia highlights the urgent need for international aid and support to assist those affected by the storm and its aftermath.
