Donald Trump announced that he will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week during a town hall event in Michigan. Trump praised Modi as “fantastic” but also criticized India, calling it a “very big abuser” in terms of trade policies with the U.S. Trump did not provide details about the meeting, and the Indian Embassy did not respond to requests for comment.
Trump previously visited India in 2020 and expressed a desire to enhance trade ties with the country. Modi is scheduled to visit the U.S. from Sept. 21 to 23 to attend the Quad Leaders’ Summit and speak at the United Nations General Assembly.
During Modi’s last visit to the U.S. in 2023, the two countries signed technology and defense deals that deepened their bilateral relationship. Recently, the U.S. Department of State announced a partnership with India to improve the semiconductor value chain, acknowledging the importance of global collaboration in the semiconductor industry.
The meeting between Trump and Modi comes at a time of growing cooperation between the U.S. and India, with both countries working together to address global challenges and advance their economic and technological interests.
