Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood producer, was arraigned on an additional sex crimes charge in a New York City courtroom. He pleaded not guilty to one count of criminal sexual act in the first degree, stemming from an alleged assault in 2006. In all, over 80 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct. The #MeToo movement was inspired by these allegations. In 2020, Weinstein was convicted in New York but his sentence was overturned in April due to errors in the trial. A retrial is scheduled for November. In addition to the New York case, Weinstein was found guilty of rape and sexual assault in a Los Angeles trial in 2022 and was sentenced to 16 years in prison. He is appealing the Los Angeles verdict. Weinstein was once a prominent figure in the movie industry but his career collapsed in 2017 when allegations of sexual misconduct came to light. The #MeToo movement inspired others to speak out against powerful men in various industries. Weinstein’s legal team maintains his innocence and he chose not to testify in his trials.
