Michaela DePrince, born in Sierra Leone during the civil war, was adopted by Elaine along with her friend Mia. Elaine adopted both girls after learning that Michaela had been rejected by multiple families due to her vitiligo. Michaela’s journey in ballet began as a child, and she eventually became a professional ballerina, joining prestigious companies such as the Dance Theatre of Harlem and Boston Ballet.
Elaine DePrince, who had lost three children in the past, embraced Michaela and Mia as her own daughters. The bond between the family was strong, and Elaine’s passing added to the grief already felt after Michaela’s sudden death. Michaela’s love for ballet and determination to succeed in the dance world were evident in her performances and accomplishments. The family asked for space to mourn and cope with the tragic losses.
