Ryan Wesley Routh, the man in custody in connection with a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, has a long history of criminal and civil court issues, including a conviction for possessing a machine gun. Routh was arrested after shots were fired at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. In 2002, he was convicted of possessing a weapon of mass destruction, specifically a machine gun, in North Carolina. Routh has multiple convictions for other crimes such as carrying a concealed weapon, possession of stolen property, and hit-and-run incidents, but did not serve time in state prison for these offenses.
Court records show that Routh was involved in over 100 criminal cases in Guilford County, North Carolina. In addition to his criminal history, Routh also went through a divorce in 2003 and faced civil judgments related to a roofing company he was involved with being sued by contractors and individuals. Palm Beach State’s Attorney Dave Aronberg indicated that the federal government would be handling the prosecution of Routh for the incident at Trump International Golf Club.
Aronberg suggested that Routh was lying in wait for Trump and aimed at a Secret Service agent before being apprehended. Routh was arrested on Interstate 95 and was described as compliant and quiet after being taken into custody. The exact details of the events leading up to Routh’s arrest are still unclear.
