French opposition lawmakers refuse to discuss the government’s major immigration bill.

French opposition lawmakers have dealt a blow to President Emmanuel Macron’s government by rejecting an immigration bill without even debating it. The bill was intended to strengthen the country’s ability to expel foreigners considered undesirable. The government, which lacks a majority in parliament, now has the option to send the bill to the Senate or seek a compromise on the text. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin has indicated that the government may continue to push for the bill, despite its rejection. However, far-right lawmaker Marine Le Pen and conservative lawmaker Eric Ciotti have both criticized the bill for different reasons. Le Pen argues that it would increase the number of migrants coming into the country, while Ciotti believes it does not adequately address the migratory challenge. On the other hand, Mathilde Panot, president of the hard-left “Rebel France” group at the National Assembly, welcomed the rejection of the bill and called on the government to withdraw it. Advocacy organizations, including French anti-racism group SOS Racisme, have also criticized the measure. They argue that it poses a threat to the rights of asylum-seekers and migrants and has damaged the country’s image abroad. The government has yet to make a decision on the next steps regarding the bill. This rejection reflects the ongoing political tensions surrounding the issue of immigration in France.
